CPS - Making the news
Tuesday, March 16th, 2010Hi,
Picked up a story that the CPS in London are failing the public. Too many cases not actually getting to court as deadlines are passed, so a Jury and Judge don’t even get them in front of them. Now having worked with the front line staff, they are like many other public sector jobs, hard working but led by people who maybe shouldn’t always be managers, not supported by the Government, not funded etc etc.
Well here is a suggestion, why not let the Police become the Prosecutors again for all minor cases leaving the CPS to prosecute the more serious cases?
So many times the Solicitor or Barrister would only pick up the file when in court and would whisper across - ‘whats the basics in this case’? Too much for them to do. Let the Police do it, it would give officers skills in giving evidence. nowadays you may never go to court until its a big case.
Just a thought again.
Our aims (the CPS)
CPS London is committed to making the capital safer. We will do this by reducing violent and sexual crimes, drug-related offences and acquisitive crime. You may have seen gangs of people in Black capes with Wigs fighting crime - that’s us!
We also aim to improve public confidence in the fairness and effectiveness of the criminal justice system and to improve our service to victims and witnesses. This seems to be going very well at the moment, we are fairly in-effective.
Our other priorities include making the criminal pay. This year we aim to recover £20 million worth of criminal assets. This can be used to help pay for Expert Witnesses and better crime fighting outfits. The cape keeps getting tangled up and is therefore a health and safety issue.
Okay so this maybe a slightly tweaked version. Now I know that the CPS are doing okay as they are fighting crime and presenting the evidence. Maybe the Police had better watch out…
